A first screen from open data, not a site study: mean wind at 100 m (Global Wind Atlas, about 1 km cells here), sun on south-facing panels at latitude tilt (NRCan, 100 kWh/kWp classes), distance to the mapped high-voltage lines, and the typical slope of each square kilometre (terrain at about 175 m; a steep bank can hide in a flat square). Point at the ground to read it; click for the site card.

Stations, by source
Network and structures
Heights are true terrain, raised 1.3 times up close and up to 4 times for the whole province so the mountains read from afar. Shapes are drawn larger than life so they read from afar, and shrink toward true size as you come close. Turbines stand where the national database puts them, with its hub height and rotor. A hydro station on a mapped dam takes the dam's crest and height; other stations grow with their recorded capacity, and dim ones have none on record. Pylons are illustrative: spaced along the mapped lines, because the public record holds the lines, not the towers. The light on the lines shows the network, not the direction of power: the record carries neither.
Energy Infrastructure & Generation Capacity
The model integrates publicly available data on electricity generation, transmission infrastructure, wind turbines, large dams, run-of-river hydro, and geothermal resources across British Columbia.
Reading the record...
- Generating Stations
- Every power plant mapped in OpenStreetMap inside the province, with the capacity it records where one is given. A station mapped twice is counted once: two records of one source within 3 km, or of the same name and capacity within 15 km.
- Wind Turbines
- The Canadian Wind Turbine Database, Natural Resources Canada: every turbine with its project, model, hub height, rotor and year.
- Transmission Lines
- BC Transmission Lines, Province of British Columbia: the high-voltage network from BC Hydro, independent producers and private owners. The public version carries no voltage.
- Large Dams (15 m and taller)
- BC Dams, Province of British Columbia: active dams 15 m or taller, with height, crest length, type and year.
- Run-of-River Hydro
- BC Hydro, independent power projects in operation (as of April 1, 2026), type Non-Storage Hydro: 14 projects of 30 MW and more, 1,299 MW in all, with their capacity, energy a year and the BC Hydro call or program they sell under. Positions from Natural Resources Canada and OpenStreetMap.
- Geothermal Resources
- Natural Resources Canada, Clean Energy Resources and Projects maps: deep geothermal resources by type (Geological Survey of Canada, Open File 6914) and undisturbed ground temperatures. Resource potential, not projects.
